EVERLORE

A library of unfinished tales, and a lantern to keep them lit.

01 — The library

Every story anyone ever began

Everlore keeps them all. Most were never finished.

They wait on the shelves, holding their breath. A story no one reads comes undone — thread by thread, quietly, without complaint. Nothing here lasts on its own.

You are a binder. The library gives you a lantern and asks nothing else of you.

Light was the only thing holding any of them together.

02 — Binding a tale

Five fragments and a needle of light

Between the shelves lie the unfinished ones: a hero with no place to stand, a place with no ending. The library deals you five of them, and you sew them together.

1
The library deals the hand. You do not write anything — there is no blank page here, only what you were given.
2
You may redraw a single fragment, or take the hand as it fell.
3
You bind. For three breaths the tale opens as a world — three scenes, built from your fragments, with the words living inside them.
4
Then it closes and becomes a small book on a shelf that is yours.

The Turn decides the colour of the whole tale — the palette, the fog, where the light falls. No other fragment carries colour. That is why no two tales clash, and why every one of them looks whole.

03 — The lantern

Light is what you can read

The library is dark. A spine tells you its title and its binder only when your lantern touches it. Further than that there are shelves and silhouettes and nothing else.

So walking is not travel. Walking is how you find anything at all. The tales you discover early are the ones nobody has reached yet.

Hundreds of small lights. Some steady. Some going out.

04 — Unravelling

A tale no one reads comes undone

Left alone, a book on the shelf dims, flickers, and unravels. You can watch it happen. Walk the deep stacks at the wrong hour and you will pass tales in their last minutes.

Reading one puts it back. That is the whole mechanic — you hold your lantern to a dimming spine, you read what is there, and the light comes back. It was all it had needed.

It buys time, not permanence. A tale that stops being read starts dimming again. Which means the library is not kept alive by its author, but by strangers walking past and choosing to look.

The deep stacks. The oldest tales, still going out.

05 — The canon

One tale a night, kept forever

Every night the library chooses one. The chosen tale never dims again, no matter who reads it or who forgets. It stands in the bright hall with the name of its binder still upon it, and it stays there.

Canon is the only permanence in Everlore. Every other tale lives on borrowed light.

The bright hall. The only place in Everlore that is never dark.

The rest end. It was not only sadness. It was something gentle, and a little warm.
